Religious Studies Review publishes the following types of content:

Short Book Review
Short reviews are evaluative treatments of recent publications of interest to religious studies scholars and teachers. They range between 350 and 750 words in length. Such notes should include attention to the potential use value of the book for both research and teaching and some contextualization within current scholarly conversations.

Review Essay
Review Essays are in-depth reviews of one book or a set of books around a common theme. They are between 2,000 and 6,000 words in length.

Special Issue
Special Issues feature a large group of review essays organized around a common theme (for example, “New Religious Movements and Documentary Films”). The essays range between 2,000 to 6,000 words in length. The Special Issue is managed by a guest editor who edits, arranges, and coordinates the project, and it usually includes an Editor’s Introduction. It can also include interviews, author’s responses, and other comments.

Serialization
Serializations are review essays around a theme or area that appear consecutively over time in different issues of the journal. For example, “recent works on pilgrimage,” is a collection of one or two long reviews on this topic that appears over four issues. Like normal review essays, they range from 2,000 to 6,000 words in length.

Symposium
Symposia feature a collection of four or five essays around a book or set of books, and they are often based on panels organized for the American Academy of Religion (AAR) annual conference. Reviewers examine the book or books either individually or as a set, and the symposium typically includes a respondent or an author’s response. Symposium essays range from 2,000 to 6,000 words in length.
