Spiritual experiences are an integral feature of human existence and occur universally across human cultures. Through an interdisciplinary approach including neuroscience, evolutionary biology, and the humanities, I hope to argue that these experiences are powerful tools for inducing change, both positive and negative, in the individual and society. With rising trends of secularism, how will the various aspects of these experiences change? Will secular society value them or condemn them? Will spiritual experiences be reduced to biological functions or will they continue to answer existential questions for humanity?
